We’ve been blessed with amazing weather the past week, and it looks like it’s here to stay. It’s unexpected for this time of year – less than a year ago, we were still having snow fall April. While I’m not trying to be too optimistic, this is excellent. We typically don’t have a spring here in Montreal. It’s usually cut short by a long winter and we typically jump pretty quickly to summer and have our pool ready before the May long weekend.
Either way, I miss my backyard right now – so much so that I was able to get my husband outside to shovel some of the snow so that I could see the pool area again. It may seem crazy but I love to go sit in our southern facing backyard and soak up any sun that comes our way. This gets me just that much closer to doing that.
I’m suffering from what I like to call “Pre-Spring Fever”. You may suffer from this as well around the time where the temperatures start to rise above zero but that snow just can’t melt fast enough. And if not treated properly, can lead to Spring Fever. Luckily, I have some therapies to help you cope.
First, make sure you’ve added some green to your home. If you have already done so, add another small plant and make it your priority to take care of that sucker like its your first born. I’m full into this treatment. I’m still looking for my Ficus Lyrata (Fiddle-Leaf Fig) – much to my husband’s objection – but these will do for now.
Second, fresh cut flowers. They don’t have to be expensive, even grocery store varieties will do. Just get some floral aromas and colours into your space to freshen the room and YOU up.
Next, pack away your warmest winter jacket. Even if you have to wear an extra sweater under your lighter one, the fact that you’ve started clearing out the closets will do you a world of good. Just the extra space within the closets will give you some relief. However, be sure to leave the kid’s winter coats on them until the temperature hits above 10 degrees – the last thing you want is a judgemental call home to bring you down.
Then, purchase a few home and garden magazines. Take time to read them OR just place them on your coffee table to let yourself and others know that you are on top of the latest styles and trends for the new season.
If you have’t already – ease into a workout routine. On a more serious note, this couldn’t be better to improve energy, help you sleep better, stave off any depression or anxiety and best of all, make you feel confident at the pool this summer. The earlier you start the better! My faves are from the Nike+ family – both the running app and the Nike Training Club app. Best activity, just to get outside?
Finally, kick of some spring cleaning, while your still stuck inside Once the snow is all gone you are going to be all about getting outside and working on the yard. You won’t want to be stuck cleaning cupboards, windows, dusting baseboards, etc. Get all that out of the way now so that you have nothing preventing you from enjoying the sunshine once it has arrived for good. Not doing this can result in an extension of Cabin Fever – which is what we suffer from being stuck indoors with little daylight all winter.
