Your bed is probably on of the most important pieces of furniture in your home. Sleep is one of the key elements for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Reduced sleep has been linked to many health issues – it can increase your risk of chronic diseases, like depression, anxiety, obesity, heart conditions and more. I know first hand how lack of sleep can cause/worsen conditions, as I suffer from general anxiety disorder (in which adequate sleep is an important party of keeping it in check for me). And while everyone differs in what they need to get enough sleep, if your like me, enough space is important.
We have always had a queen bed – and as much as I tried to convince my husband that we should have a king size bed, it was an uphill battle. Plus there were always other things to budget for. We had struggled through years of our middle daughter climbing into our queen size bed in the middle of the night and us ending up cramped on the edges. And we always enjoyed trips in which our hotel room had a king.
However, recently the stars aligned for us to consider finally upgrading to a king size bed.
But there were a few conditions that we had. We would not be changing any of our other bedroom furniture (which was purchased about 9 years ago but is a high quality, and timeless style) and we had to stick to a pretty tight budget. My husband originally told me $1000, to which I laughed as the mattress alone would be at least that – but agreed to $1500 for the bed and mattress (with a small tolerance). So I set out on a mission, convinced I could do it. Note that this did not include the bedding – which I would be covering – but was also trying to keep below $500.
Typically you could be looking at spending a minimum $3000 to change your bed to a King Size (including the bed, mattress and bedding) – if you are on a budget but you don’t shop around. This can easily be higher if you have expensive taste (and the flexibility in your budget to do it)
I was able to get my look for under $2000 ($1900 to be exact) – and it is possible to go even lower – depending on what type of mattress you like.
Check out what I purchased below…

It all started with the mattress. I knew the it would not be cheap for us – we are very picky and like a softer mattress, rather than a firm one. So I had a big challenge to find a bed that would fit within budget. I did a bit of mattress shopping though to see if I could actually get one that would work for us – below $1000. I started with IKEA. I have to say, I was impressed with their selection of quality firm and soft mattresses. I finally settled on HESSTUN model as one that would work for us. Price was $799 plus tax – with taxes in, it meant that I had about $600 left for a bed if I wanted to come in at budget.
I was scouring websites and stores trying to find the perfect balance of price, quality and style. Also, I had to ensure it matched the rest of our furniture – which was solid wood and an espresso colour. I would either have to match the colour if I stayed with a wood bed, or go to a different material. The wood ones I was seeing did not seem to work for us in either colour or price – which makes sense for solid wood. I’m positive they were worth the price – but I had a budget to meet.
This is where I went back to scoping an upholstered bed. I had wanted one for sometime, but was VERY picky on style and colour.
So I continued to search, and of course, old faithful, Wayfair.ca came through for me. I had ordered a few things from the site and my experience has always been positive. However, I was concerned, since I had never ordered furniture. But, Ifound THE perfect bed (well almost perfect and I will get to that). Uphostered, beige/taupe colour, king, and the price…$550 plus tax!!! So I was able to come in ON BUDGET for the bed and mattress. So took the plunge.
The bed was delivered earlier than originally expected and it was super easy to put together. The quality is also very good for the price. I was concerned that the base wouldn’t support the mattress enough and we would have to add a bit of support but it was really sturdy. The ONLY thing that is a little disappointing about the bed is how low the headboard is and how high the base is. With bedding and pillows you can barely see the headboard.
For the height of the base…if we would have gone with the IKEA mattress mentioned above, we would have been ok for height. BUT before we went to purchase the mattress, we stopped at Dormez-Vous (or Sleep Country for those in Canada outside of Quebec) just to see if there were any specials. Once we tried the beds there, there was one that my husband liked more. It was more expensive, but he was footing the bill so technically it was him going over budget, not me 😉 However, we were still able to get a new mattress at a demo model price with a little bit of negotiation – saving us a lot of money. Not sure if that option is always available but it was for us that day.
Anyways, back to the height, the mattress we ended up purchasing is about 14 inches deep, at least. On the base, this makes the bed really high. However, if we would have gone with the IKEA mattress, we would have saved about 2-3 inches of height .
Onto the bedding – I think my husband forgot that due to this change, we would need all new bedding – so it wasn’t in our budget. However, I was able to do a few things to save money.
- Mattress protector from Amazon.ca
- These can be anywhere from $30 – $200 – which can be a bit excessive. I would be open to spending in the higher range, if it was sure to offer better quality – however, based on the reviews – I concluded that there didn’t seem to be that much consistent evidence that high price = delivering on the claims. So I opted for this version – which was about $45 and so far so good.
- Sheets from Homesense
- Since these are the things that are actually interacting with your skin – they are super important to me. However, still being on a budget, I was able to get 600 thread count organic cotton sheet set for $70 and extra pillow cases for $12. I kept our standard pillows to sleep on, since they were recently purchased and high quality, and then saved on king pillows as they were going to be more for decor than actual sleeping on. Each pillow was $20. I went with a very pale blush colour for the sheets and a beige for the extra pillow cases.
- Duvet & Cover from IKEA
- I have mad love for IKEA duvets. They are high quality, have an option for every comfort level and best of all, affordable. All my duvets are from IKEA. I went with the HÖNSBÄR warmer duvet cover – which will be perfect for us in the winter. I may go back and get the cooler version for the summer as our room can get warm during heat waves but this one has worked so far. Cost was $80. For the cover, I was looking for something very neutral, but not white. White has dominated our room for probably the last 5 years so we needed a change. Plus white wouldn’t have really matched the new headboard. So I went with the SKOGSALM which was $60. The colour variation really works with everything in our room.
So I was able to do all the bedding for under $350 – taxes in. This could have easily been close to double the cost if I wouldn’t have shopped around for the mattress cover and duvet alone.
Like I had mentioned earlier – this look can be achieved for less than $2000 CAD after tax – which is pretty damn good for the quality we have. It was a bit of a challenge but it just takes some shopping around and looking at all the options (and not being too eager and jumping in too quick).
