The client has asked me to give her living room a bit of a refresh with a Mid-Century Modern type of style. Luckily, she already has most of the basics of mid-century modern decor – warm wood, different shapes, contrast.
First, I started by checking out her current space. She provided me some images and a floor plan (not shared) in order for me to see what I was working with. From that I was able to do some brainstorming on colour schemes and then find some inspirational images/pieces.

Next, I began researching colours, furniture and accessories that would fit within her current space, but also one that could grow to accommodate the recommended furniture. The plan is to change the furniture later, so I had the challenge of finding accessories and decor that will work with the current furniture also.
From the idea board above, you can see that I have gone with a blue-yellow contrast. The client already had two great blue accent walls (colour shown in the mood board). She also already had some mid-century accent furniture (coffee and end tables, console table, mirrors and a lamp). But adding that yellow in is really going to create a more cohesive look to the space – tying all the elements together.
Yellow is one of my favourite accents right now – it can go with so many colours and is such a happy colour. Tell me you don’t smile when you see some bold yellow. Its almost impossible.
The shelf was something I found on Wayfair.com and embodies the mid-century style. Its so perfect and also affordable. Its a key piece next to the current entertainment console to offset the white.
I also love to incorporate live plants – which if you keep up to date on my blog – you are very familiar with. So you can see that of course I have added some in.
I also had to ensure that all the furniture would fit properly in the space and that the client has a proposed layout to be able to place everything themselves – since this is an E-Design and I can’t do it for them. It doesn’t have to be perfect – but at least give the right approximate locations.
So as you can see, E-Design is not something outside the realm of possibility for any individual. Technology today allows and there are many great designers out there offering it right now. I can assure you, no less work is put into it from the designer. I spent the same number of hours on the project as I would for a local project – but it can be done from anywhere in the world, and on your own time. This allows you the flexibility to pull together the space as the funds become available, because you already have the direction and vision established.
